Young Men and Boys Flooding ERs in Ontario Due to Gambling Issues

A new study released in The American Journal of Preventive Medicine on Wednesday, September 16, has focused on the increased visits to the Emergency Room (ER) by young men and boys struggling with their gambling habits. Men and boys in Ontario report more gambling-related visits to ER over past 14 years.

The survey specifically focused on Ontario, Canada, and cited the rapid growth of regulated gambling, specifically the introduction of betting on single sports events. 757 people have visited the ER a total of 952 times in Ontario alone since 2012.

Hospital visits for gambling-related problems mostly come from men and boys, with 72% of the total. The people who ended up going to the ER went there due to substance use or mental health disorders, including suicidal ideation. There had been a 95.5% increase in calls from this demographic placing calls to ConnexOntario, which is the province’s addiction and mental health support line.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
