Women in Poker: Facing Sexism and Challenging Stereotypes

The Women's Week is taking place in Las Vegas, featuring the Ladies Event at the WSOP and daily affordable tournaments for women. Darya Feshchenko finished third in a $500 women's tournament at the Venetian. She shared her experience, noting that the tournament started with a mix-up over registration times but ultimately went smoothly.

Sandra Mor, under the pseudonym Sia Layta, wrote the book 'Poker of the Black Widow' to popularize poker among women and use gender stereotypes to their advantage. She disguised herself as a man to prove that women face different treatment at poker tables. Sandra Mor mentioned that her results improved significantly after the transformation, though specific details are not provided.

Darya Feshchenko mentioned that sexism in poker often comes from those who are unaware of their own biases. She recounted instances where people questioned her abilities due to her gender. Lika Gerasimova noted that some players get more upset when they lose to a woman, which can be a form of sexism. Evgenia 'Emily' Getman mentioned that she rarely encounters sexism in offline poker but has experienced it online.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
