Susquehanna International Uses Poker to Train Successful Traders
Susquehanna International, a leading trading firm, incorporates poker into its training program for young traders. During their 10-week training, trainees spend at least 100 hours playing poker, with co-founder Jeff Yass sometimes joining them. The firm's annual poker tournament has seen some employees win at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
Founded in 1987 by Jeff Yass and his friends from Binghamton University, Susquehanna International has grown to over 3,000 employees across approximately a dozen offices worldwide. The firm handles more than 22% of all derivative transactions in the US market, according to Alphacution's 2023 data.
Susquehanna International has expanded into sports betting, offering betting lines to bookmakers for various sports. This year, they launched a new trading division for betting on Kalshi, a prediction platform. Todd Simkin, who has been with the company since 1997 and mentored hundreds of novice traders, explained how understanding poker strategy helps in trading across various markets. Simkin also launched SIG Re in 2021, a venture that handles insurance deals with leagues and lotteries.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
