Poker Solvers: Revolutionizing the Game or Causing Controversy?

Poker solvers have become an integral part of the poker landscape, with professionals and enthusiasts debating their impact. The software became widely available to the public in early 2015 with the beta release of SimplePostflop and the announcement of PioSOLVER. These tools allow players to analyze and optimize their strategies, but their influence on the game is a subject of much debate.

Early Adoption by Professionals

High-stakes players like RaúlGonzalez and Timofey Kuznetsov were among the first to adopt solvers. RaúlGonzalez mentioned purchasing the first NLH solver in 2013 for $200k, and a trainer based on Monker costing less than $10k. Timofey Kuznetsov acquired the same software for $100k. Alex Millar also received an offer for exclusive rights to a solver program for a six-figure sum, highlighting the early interest and investment in these tools.

The Debate on GTO

The concept of Game Theory Optimal (GTO) play has been a central point of discussion. Tom Dwan argued that GTO is not applicable to games with incomplete information, except for simple games, making bots strong in HU limit. This view was contested by players like Alex Millar and Ben Sulsky, who believed in the potential of poker GTO. The debate even led to a hypothetical bet between Tom Dwan and Alex Millar, where Dwan claimed he could beat a GTO bot in 500k hands of HU NL.

Public Opinion

Rob Yong conducted a poll where 51% of respondents considered solvers the main threat to poker. Landon Tice recently conducted a similar poll asking if solvers are good or bad for poker, with opinions ranging from solvers being a positive development to concerns about their impact on the game's future.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
