Poker: Is It Skill or Luck? The Debate Rages On
Poker, a game that originated in the mid-19th century, has seen a resurgence in popularity with the rise of online gaming. Today, millions of amateur and professional players compete on platforms like CasinoDeps poker websites using cash or join offline tournaments in their cities. The most popular variations include Stud poker, Draw poker, Texas Hold’Em, and Community card poker.
Researchers have declared the creation of an unbeatable poker-playing computer program, sparking debate on whether poker is a game of skill or luck. A study published in the Journal of Gambling Studies in 2012 aimed to settle this debate. The study involved 300 participants divided into 'expert' and 'non-expert' groups, playing 60 hands of Texas Hold’em with fixed deals. The results showed that the final amounts of money the experts gained were not different from the non-expert players, suggesting that poker is largely a game of luck.
However, advanced algorithms like Counterfactual Regret Minimisation (CFR) and programs like Cepheus, developed by the Computer Poker Research Group (CPRG) at the University of Alberta, offer a different perspective. CFR is designed to solve heads-up limit Texas Hold’em by approaching a Nash equilibrium. Cepheus, introduced in 2015, has a strategy very close to a Nash equilibrium scheme for heads-up limit Texas Hold'em. These developments suggest that while luck plays a part, poker is also a game of skill.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
