Jonathan Little's Poker Strategy: Maximize Value with Strong Hands

Jonathan Little, a renowned poker professional with a WSOP bracelet, two WPT titles, and the 2024 PokerGO Cup championship, shares his insights on maximizing value with strong hands in poker. His advice is based on a hand from a $550 buy-in live poker tournament where a common mistake is highlighted.

Little advises that folding is often the best play with marginal hands like 10♣9♥ unless opponents are likely to play poorly post-flop. He emphasizes that with shallower stacks, folding middle offsuit connectors is preferable even if it only costs one big blind to see the flop. This strategy is crucial for increasing your chances of winning a significant pot.

When it comes to playing strong hands, Little recommends raising with the nuts on the flop to build the pot and extract maximum value. He notes that slow playing the nuts is an option, but raising is usually the best play when facing decently strong hands. This approach helps in building a larger pot and making sizable bets on subsequent streets.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
