Charles Barkley Warns About In-Game Betting Dangers Despite His Gambling Past

NBA legend Charles Barkley, known for his love of gambling and his role as a brand ambassador for FanDuel, has expressed concerns about the dangers of in-game betting. Barkley, who has admitted to betting $1million on at least 20 separate occasions and has won and mostly lost $millions over the years, including $2.5million in a 6-hour Blackjack session, warned of the possible dangers of in-game betting, with match-fixing a potential pitfall.

Barkley stated that his own gambling “problem” isn’t really a problem. In 2007 he stated: “If you're a drug addict or an alcoholic, those are problems. I gamble for too much money. As long as I can continue to do it I don't think it's a problem.” He added: “Do I think it's a bad habit? Yes, I think it's a bad habit. Am I going to continue to do it? Yes, I'm going to continue to do it.”

Despite his warnings, Barkley had four outstanding $100k markers at the Wynn Las Vegas called on him, eventually repaying the huge debt.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
