Bill Walters: The Legendary Gambler Who Revolutionized Sports Betting
Bill Walters is one of the most successful gamblers in American history. He was one of the first to use computer analysis for sports betting in the 1980s. Bill Walters was sentenced to 5 years in prison and a $10 million fine for insider trading in 2017. He spent 30 months in prison and was later released under house arrest during the pandemic.
Bill Walters' autobiography was released this month. In his book, Bill Walters mentioned that he started betting on sports at a very young age. He was introduced to gambling by his uncle, who often took him to a billiard hall. Bill Walters moved to Las Vegas in 1982 to become a professional gambler.
In Las Vegas, Bill Walters met Mike Kent, who had more accurate predictions than him. Mike Kent, an engineer, created the first computer program for modeling sports events in the late 1970s. This program used algorithms written on punch cards and was processed by a rented computer, which was less powerful than modern laptops.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
