Warren Buffett: Prediction Markets Are Just Gambling

Warren Buffett, the renowned investor known as the Oracle of Omaha, has expressed his concerns about prediction markets and day trading. In an interview with CNBC, Buffett compared day trading to gambling, stating that buying 'one-day options' is not investing but speculating—'it’s gambling.'

Buffett's skepticism extends to the current mood of Americans, whom he believes are in a gambling mood unlike ever before. He cautioned that high-volatility events, such as real-world events that can be traded on, make prediction markets susceptible to cheaters. This concern was highlighted by the recent arrest of a US soldier who allegedly made more than $400,000 trading on Polymarket related to events involving Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Buffett's philosophy on investing focuses on long-term strategies, arguing that stocks and assets should be held for extended periods to see if they truly work out. He illustrated his concerns with the sector by describing it as a 'church with a casino attached,' emphasizing the speculative nature of prediction markets.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
