British Poker Player Tommy Yates Wins Big at WSOP with 1 Cent Buy-In
Tommy Yates, a 58-year-old British man living in Rhodes, won a $13,000 package to the WSOP Main Event by starting with a 1 cent buy-in satellite tournament on 888Poker. He finished in 486th place, earning $19,500.
Tommy Yates' wife encouraged him to take a summer break from poker. After the break, he decided to try his luck in a WSOP Las Vegas package promotion on 888Poker. The promotion allows players to win their way up through a series of step satellite tournaments, with buy-ins ranging from 1 cent to $1,050.
Tommy Yates played very tightly in the WSOP Main Event, folding pre-flop hands like AK and QQ to avoid busting. He said, "I played so tight that I folded AK and QQ pre-flop. It might seem stupid, but I was so motivated to make the money that when I did, I felt like I had won the bracelet and $8,000,000." He plans to try to win a package to the WSOPE Berlin and wants to return to the WSOP Main Event next year.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
