Tom Dwan Loses $246,000 in Single Hand to Chamath Palihapitiya on High Stakes Poker
Tom Dwan, a well-known poker player from the USA, found himself on the losing end of a high-stakes game on High Stakes Poker. In a recent episode, Dwan faced off against businessman Chamath Palihapitiya and lost a staggering $246,000 in a single hand.
The pivotal hand began with Palihapitiya betting $1,600 pre-flop with 9♥-9♣. Dwan, holding 7♦-5♥, raised to $5,000. Palihapitiya responded with a re-raise to $17,000, which Dwan called. The flop revealed 5♣-10♠-9♠, giving Palihapitiya a set of nines. Palihapitiya raised $20,000, and Dwan, with a middle pair, called.
The turn card was 9♦, improving Palihapitiya's hand to four of a kind. Both players checked. The river card, 7♣, improved Dwan's hand to two pairs, but he was unaware that Palihapitiya held a straight flush. Palihapitiya bet $85,000, and Dwan called. When the cards were revealed, Dwan simply said 'wow' and disappointedly threw his cards away.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
