Shuan Liu: Women Face Unique Challenges in High-Stakes Poker

Shuan Liu made history in May 2025 when she won a $25,000 high roller tournament at Triton. This victory was particularly notable because Liu is the first woman to achieve this feat. Her win was captured in a video by Ilya Gorodetsky, showcasing her skillful play against Daniel Dvoress in the heads-up final.

In a summer podcast with Janglmen, Liu discussed the challenges women face in high-stakes poker. She mentioned that while there are many talented women players, they often go unnoticed due to language barriers and the lack of content creation. Liu highlighted that women like Cherish Andrews, who won a $25,000 tournament in Florida and earned $408,000, are examples of successful female players.

Liu also touched on the difficulties women face in finding backing for high-stakes tournaments. She noted that male backers often expect additional 'bonuses' from female players, making it harder for women to secure the necessary support. Additionally, Liu mentioned that she was an ambassador for WPT but her contract has ended. She also revealed that content creation is not her strong suit, which further complicates her visibility in the poker community.
