Understanding Poker Solvers: How They Work and Why They Matter

Poker solvers have become indispensable tools for players looking to improve their strategies. Among the most popular are PioSolver, GTO+, and Simple Postflop. These solvers, introduced in 2015, have significantly elevated the overall level of poker play. But how do they work, and should players memorize their solutions to replicate them at the tables?

Solvers calculate the optimal strategy based on data inputted by the user. This data includes preflop ranges for each player, bet and raise sizes, effective stack sizes, bank size, and the probability of a donk/lead. However, these solutions are abstract because, in real no-limit hold'em, you cannot know your opponents' preflop ranges exactly, nor can you be sure they will stick to predefined bet sizes. The solver's solutions are limited by the data you provide.

While solvers cannot completely solve no-limit hold'em, they can help understand the basic principles underlying poker strategy. The Nodelock function, for instance, allows you to fix one player's strategy to get an exploiting counter-strategy from the solver. This function is particularly useful for experimenting with different strategies against specific types of players. By making small adjustments at the beginning of the decision tree, you can significantly improve your strategy against certain opponents. However, it's crucial to be cautious with your assumptions about your opponents' play, as incorrect assumptions can lead to negative outcomes.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
