Poker Queens: Linda Johnson and Jennifer Shahade Share Their Experiences
Poker is a game that has long been dominated by men, with women making up only a small percentage of players. Dan Tolpannen believes that the poker community needs to make women feel comfortable at the tables to attract more female players.
Linda Johnson, a pioneer in the world of poker, started playing in the early 70s after her father encouraged her to learn the game. Her journey was not without challenges, as she faced hostility from male opponents and had to prove herself time and time again. Johnson's first poker tournament win was in Las Vegas Club, where she faced hostility from male opponents.
Jennifer Shahade, another prominent female poker player, started playing poker after her brother, Greg Shahade, encouraged her to learn the game. Unlike many other poker players, Shahade's family, including her brother, encouraged her to play poker. This support system helped her overcome the challenges she faced in the male-dominated world of poker.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
