Poker Pros Reveal Their Substance Use: From Coffee to Cocaine
A recent study by Nova Southeastern University has brought to light the use of various substances among professional poker players. The study, which surveyed 198 poker players, mostly men aged around 25, found that many players use a range of substances to enhance their performance.
According to the findings, 28% of surveyed poker players constantly take at least one prescribed medical substance. Additionally, 34% of players smoke marijuana, and 8% snort cocaine. The most popular substances used by poker players are caffeine, energy drinks, marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol. Furthermore, 46% of respondents reported using dietary supplements, with 30% taking vitamin B and 23% guaraná.
The study also highlighted the use of prescribed medications, with amphetamine-based drugs like Adderall being the most commonly used, by 62% of respondents. While Adderall helps players focus, it also has significant side effects, including increased blood pressure, heart attacks, vision impairment, and hair loss. Poker trainer Nick "Stinko_Mikko" Reini shared his experience with Adderall, noting its benefits and the dangers of overuse. He recounted an incident where he lost track of the number of tablets he had taken during an online session, leading to a dangerous spike in his pulse and blood pressure, which required medical attention.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
