Poker Pros Jason Mercier and Anthony Gregg Share Insights on Staking

Poker professionals Jason Mercier and Anthony Gregg have shared their insights on staking, a common practice in tournament poker where players buy and sell shares.

Jason Mercier, a finalist of the World Series of Poker, began staking in October 2008. After winning a significant amount of money, he started staking players like Brent Hanks and Dan O'Brien. He initially found staking to be an easy way to make money, but later realized it required a lot of time and effort to manage.

Anthony Gregg, a two-time finalist of the PCA main event and winner of the WPT Parx this year, has never needed staking help. He built his bankroll through cash games, which he believes is a more reliable way to build a bankroll compared to tournaments. Gregg advises tournament players to strive for independence as soon as possible, even if it means dropping down in limits.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
