Poker Players Reflect on a Year of Growth and Change

Poker players have shared their reflections on the past year, highlighting significant changes in their equipment, skills, and financial situations. Irieguy, for instance, transitioned from playing six tables on a 19-inch CRT monitor with poor resolution to owning five Dell 2001fp monitors, purchased with his SNG winnings. He also made more money from rakeback than from poker in the previous year and trained 16 people, half of whom made poker their main source of income.

bones, another player, went from playing one table, usually from a computer lab, to playing 4-9 tables. He also significantly increased his financial situation, stating that he now has much more money than a year ago. SuitedSixes, who played 89 SNGs at $11 with a ROI of 16.4% and ITM of 36% a year ago, has since played over 10,000 SNGs and over a million hands of cash games. He also earned more from poker than from his main job in 2004 and visited the 'Summer Camp for Gamblers' in Las Vegas.

Jbrochu, who did not play poker a year ago, became interested after watching WPT and WSOP on TV. He made a $400 deposit on Stars, started with one SNG table at $5.50, and built up to a comfortable bankroll for $55 games. He also played on the final table of a third-level satellite and met Greg Raymer. J-Lo, who grinded turbos at $6.50 on Stars and played MTTs at $5 with rebuys a year ago, now grinds at $55 and plays 10 tables on three 2001FP monitors simultaneously. Eevee, who played $1/$2 and $2/$4 no-limit hold'em and four 6-max tables on a flat 17-inch monitor a year ago, now has three monitors, two of which are Dell 2001s, and plays 8 SNG tables at $33 each.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
