Poker Players Reveal What Really Grinds Their Gears

Poker players have a lot to say about the actions and behaviors that disrupt their focus during games. One common annoyance is when dealers recount cards on the river while players are still thinking. Dara O’Kerni mentioned that Andy Black asked the dealer not to recount cards on the river while players are still thinking. Matt Savage stated that the procedure of recounting cards ensures fair play, but David 'ODB' Baker expressed frustration about the risk of exposing cards during the recounting process.

Another pet peeve is when players stack their chips in stacks of 10 instead of 20. Fitz mentioned that this action annoys him. Alex Theologis expressed annoyance when players perform 'funerals' with their cards, a term that describes a situation where a player sees the opponent's hand on the showdown but delays opening their own cards. Steven Hubbard mentioned that announcements of 'two pairs' without showing cards in PLO multiway pots annoy him, especially on spaired boards like 22569.

Dealers' actions also cause frustration. RGHall expressed frustration with organizers of closed games taking excessive rake. Derek Kwan mentioned that dealers refusing to deal until the big blind posts their BB and ante annoys him. Matt Salsberg expressed annoyance when players wish each other good luck in all-ins, especially when the action is still ongoing. Jonathan Tamayo mentioned that players discarding on the river with comments like 'I knew I was ahead' annoys him. Gabriel Ramos expressed frustration when players immediately ask to exchange large chips upon sitting down. Niall Farrell mentioned that players shuffling their cards multiple times before folding annoys him. Collin Capone expressed annoyance when dealers or neighbors announce his stack size during an all-in. Bradley Martin mentioned that dealers standing up to reach for players' chips annoys him. theb52bomber.eth expressed frustration with dealers taking too long to act or dramatically flipping the river card.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
