Poker Hand Rankings: From Strongest to Weakest

Understanding the order of poker hands is crucial for any player, from beginners to regulars. In Texas Hold'em, the most popular poker variant worldwide, the hierarchy of hands determines the winner when cards are revealed at showdown. Here is the list from strongest to weakest, with simple explanations and examples.

Poker Hand Rankings

1 – Royal Flush (Sequência Real): The best possible hand in poker, consisting of 10, J, Q, K, and A of the same suit. Example: 10♠ J♠ Q♠ K♠ A♠.

2 – Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit. Example: 6♥ 7♥ 8♥ 9♥ 10♥.

3 – Quadra (Four of a Kind): Four cards of the same rank. Example: 9♣ 9♦ 9♥ 9♠ + any other card.

4 – Full House: A Three of a Kind plus a Pair. Example: 10♠ 10♥ 10♣ + 7♦ 7♣.

5 – Flush: Five cards of the same suit, not in sequence. Example: A♣ J♣ 9♣ 4♣ 2♣.

6. – Straight (Sequência): Five cards in numerical order, of different suits. Example: 4♦ 5♣ 6♠ 7♥ 8♦. Note: Ace can be high (A-K-Q-J-10) or low (A-2-3-4-5).

7 – Trinca (Three of a Kind): Three cards of the same rank. Example: K♠ K♦ K♥ + two other cards.

8 – Dois Pares (Two Pair): Two different pairs. Example: Q♠ Q♥ + 8♣ 8♦ + any card.

9 – Um Par (One Pair): One pair of cards. Example: 5♠ 5♦ + three other cards.

10 – Carta Alta (High Card): When you don't form any hand, the highest card wins. Example: A♥ 10♣ 7♦ 4♠ 2♣ → high card Ace.

Kickers are important: when two players have identical hands, the extra card (kicker) breaks the tie. Flush beats Straight: many people confuse this — flush is stronger than a straight. The rarer the hand, the stronger it is.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
