Poker Players' Hand Movements Can Reveal Card Strength, Study Finds
Poker players' hand movements can reveal the strength of their cards, according to a study published in Psychological Science. The study, titled “The Power of Poker Players' Hand Movements Can Be Accurately Assessed,” was conducted by Michael Slepian, Steven D. Young, Abraham Rachek, and Nalini Ambady.
The experiments involved showing participants short video clips of poker players making bets and asking them to evaluate the strength of the players' hands. The study found that participants who watched only the hand movements were able to significantly predict the objective evaluation of the situation. The confidence of the players and the smoothness of their hand movements significantly predicted the likelihood of their winning the hand. The study concluded that individual differences in sensitivity to nonverbal behavior can be mitigated by focusing attention on key elements.
This finding has implications for poker players and observers alike, suggesting that even subtle movements can provide valuable insights into a player's hand strength. The study's authors noted that while professional players may be able to control their facial expressions, their hand movements can still betray their intentions.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
