Phil Ivey: The Poker Legend's Unconventional Journey

Phil Ivey, a professional poker player, has had a remarkable journey filled with highs and lows. In 2000, Ivey lost $200,000 in poker by the end of summer. Despite this setback, he views money as an entry ticket to bigger games and is always ready to participate in the most expensive games.

Ivey's life is not without its challenges. He has faced racism in the predominantly white poker world. One elderly poker player still refers to him as 'nigger' behind his back. However, Ivey uses these prejudices to his advantage, turning them into a strategic edge. He believes that if opponents change their strategy due to his skin color, he can exploit this to win more.

Ivey's earnings from poker are substantial. He has won over $20 million from tournaments and $19 million from online games since 2007. Additionally, he won $22 million from casinos Crockfords in England and Borgata in the USA by determining the value of cards from their patterns. These casinos accuse Ivey of cheating, but he maintains that any smart player would do the same. Ivey was once mistaken for Jay Z when exiting a helicopter at Wembley Stadium, highlighting his celebrity status in the poker world.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
