MUSTAFABET: The Mathematical Genius of Poker
Matthew Ashton, known by his poker handle MUSTAFABET, is widely regarded as one of the strongest players in the world, particularly in limit games. His prowess in these games has earned him significant recognition, including a WSOP bracelet for the $50,000 Player Championship and five victories in COOP tournaments.
Born in 1988 in Liverpool, Ashton's journey into poker began at the age of 15. He started playing after a classmate introduced him to online poker on the FHM Poker platform. Ashton's mathematical abilities, which were evident from a young age, played a crucial role in his poker success. His parents, initially concerned about his online gambling, eventually supported his career after seeing his progress and the significant sums of money he was winning.
Ashton's first major tournament win came in 2009 when he won the WCOOP PLO event for $86,000. His nickname, MUSTAFABET, was chosen to create an image of an aggressive Asian player, derived from 'must have a bet.' Ashton's preference for PLO (Pot Limit Omaha) among all poker games highlights his strategic approach and love for the game. In 2012, Ashton took a 10-month break from poker to travel to 30 countries, documenting his journeys in a blog. His most memorable poker moment is his victory in a high-stakes heads-up match against Phil Ivey in 2015.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
