Mike Liа Wins WPT Falls View Main Event Amid Controversy
Mike Liа emerged victorious at the WPT Falls View main event, held on February 13, 2018. The experienced grinder secured a substantial prize of $359,342 and earned a pass to the WPT Champions Tournament.
Liа entered the final table with the second-largest stack, 79 blinds, while his opponent in the heads-up, Ryan Yu, had the shortest stack with 24 blinds. Yu quickly took the lead and knocked out Carlos Chadha and Tim Rutherford. However, the heads-up play between Liа and Yu became the center of controversy due to a deal they made.
In the first hand of the heads-up, Yu made a raise of 4,000,000, and Liа went all-in with 4,695,000. Yu folded. In the second hand, Liа made a limp call, and Yu raised to 5,000,000. Liа went all-in with 8,715,000, and Yu folded again. In the third hand, Yu made a raise of 1,700,000 and folded after Liа went all-in. Yu was left with a third of a big blind and played all-in, eventually losing to Liа. The deal made during the heads-up play was criticized by the poker community, with many players and fans expressing their opinions on social media.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
