Melissa Burr: From South Korea to Poker Stardom

Melissa Burr was born in South Korea and adopted by Cheryl and Kenneth Burr from New Jersey, whom she considers her true home. Burr's journey to becoming a renowned poker player is marked by her unique experiences and achievements. She became the first woman to reach the final table of the World Series of Poker Championship, earning $165,435 for 7th place.

Melissa Burr regularly plays $200/$400 in a mix of six games, including Omaha Hi-Lo, Stud Hi-Lo, and four varieties of lowball with exchange. She started playing poker during her university days in Delaware, where she initially pursued a career as a pool player. Her transition to poker was influenced by her father, who discouraged her from continuing in pool. She began playing poker online on 24 tables, primarily in limit hold'em from $2/$4 to $30/$60.

After the economic crisis in the late 2000s, Burr moved to Atlantic City to focus on live poker. It was there that she met Ryan Miller, who convinced her to switch to mix games. This decision significantly impacted her career, leading to her success in the World Series of Poker.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
