Matthew Janda Reveals Pre-Flop Poker Strategies for Small and Big Blinds
Matthew Janda, author of the book Applications of No Limit Hold‘em, published in May 2013, has been a prominent figure in the poker community. In his latest insights, Janda reveals strategies for pre-flop ranges for small and big blinds, which he intentionally left out of his book.
Janda explains two main reasons for betting and raising in poker: value betting and forcing the opponent to fold. Value betting involves getting money from an opponent with a weaker hand, while forcing the opponent to fold prevents them from realizing their equity. Janda emphasizes that these reasons are not mutually exclusive and often overlap.
Janda also discusses different types of ranges in poker: linear, polar, and condensed. Linear ranges include only the strongest hands, polar ranges include the strongest and weakest hands with a gap in the middle, and condensed ranges consist mainly of middle-strength hands. Understanding these ranges is crucial for developing effective pre-flop strategies.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
