Mark Newhaus: The Rise and Fall of a Poker Prodigy

Mark Newhaus, the youngest of three sons of a mathematics professor at the University of North Carolina, had a tumultuous journey in the world of poker. His story is one of rapid rise and an even more rapid fall, marked by both incredible wins and devastating losses.

Newhaus's initial foray into poker came after he was expelled from Appalachian State University due to alcohol-related offenses. Turning to poker, he quickly found success, growing his bankroll from $50 to $100,000 in just a month. His skills and instincts led him to significant victories, including winning over $1,500,000 in a tournament in Atlantic City.

However, Newhaus's career took a dramatic turn when he lost $280,000 in a single poker match. This loss marked the beginning of a downward spiral. He continued to make poor decisions, such as losing $45,000 playing shuffleboard while intoxicated and losing $40,000 after giving his account password to Brandy Houbaker. Over the course of a year, Newhaus lost nearly $2,000,000, highlighting the destructive nature of his gambling addiction.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
