Japan Poker Tour's Condom Prizes Spark Controversy Among Women Players
The Japan Open Poker Tour has announced a unique prize structure for their upcoming women's event, which has sparked controversy among players and spectators alike. The ¥30,000 ($190) Ladies Championship, set to begin on Oct. 12, will award condoms and lube to the top three winners, courtesy of Japanese condom manufacturer Sagami.
Instead of cash prizes, the winner will receive jewelry and other merchandise. Sagami will feature its branding throughout the tournament area and set up booths where players can sample its products. The company, founded by Saku Matsukawa, has a history of creating products for women and loving couples, and has continued to support the journey and challenges of women players.
The tournament's prize structure has drawn criticism on social media. Users like @whitezexy and Joey Ingram expressed their concerns about the prizes, feeling that the sponsorship missed the mark in promoting the game to women. Some users supported the sponsorship and praised the company’s efforts to support women. However, the controversy surrounding the tournament prizes has brought to light the ongoing debate about how to best support and promote women in poker.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
