Isaac Haxton Reflects on His Second-Place Finish in High-Stakes Poker Tournament
Isaac Haxton, who finished second in a high-stakes poker tournament celebrating the 40th anniversary of the World Series of Poker, shared his thoughts on the event. Haxton mentioned that he enjoyed playing in expensive tournaments with a smaller field of players.
One of the key hands Haxton described involved a set of sixes against Q-J of Alec Torelli. Haxton made an overbet on the flop to force Alec Torelli into making a decision. He explained, "I decided that if I posted a little more than usual, I could make him take a final decision on the flop. Maybe he will throw away some draws, which will be better than letting him catch his 8 outs, playing check-call."
In another significant hand, Haxton wanted to give Greg Raymer a chance to re-raise in a situation where Justin Bonomo had J-J and Haxton had A-A. Haxton said, "I mainly wanted to give him this chance. This was the main reason for my call. The sizes of our stacks at that time quite allowed for a call, and in fact, very many players on the BB in such a situation often will make a squeeze against us with a wider range than 4-bet after my 3-bet."

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
