Doyle Brunson Pulls Out of 2022 WSOP Main Event Due to COVID-19 Concerns

Doyle Brunson, the poker legend, has announced that he will not be participating in the 2022 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. This decision comes after initially expressing interest in playing the main event on June 21, 2022. Brunson cited COVID-19 concerns as the primary reason for his withdrawal.

In a tweet on June 30, 2022, Brunson revealed that he had decided against playing on the advice of his doctor. He mentioned having two unvaccinated individuals in his household, which increased the risk of bringing the virus home. At 88 years old, Brunson and his wife face a higher risk of mortality from COVID-19, making the decision to prioritize their health understandable.

Brunson retired from professional poker in 2018 but made a comeback in 2021 to play in a couple of events, showing his enduring passion for the game. Fans of the poker legend will hope to see him return to the tables next year if circumstances allow.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
