Carol Yaretsky, Legendary Chess Arbiter and Casino Beater, Passes Away at 86

Carol Yaretsky, an international chess arbiter from the USA, passed away on June 13, 2021, at the age of 86.

In 1989, Carol Yaretsky made history by becoming the first woman to serve as the chief arbiter of a Candidates Match quarterfinal. She officiated the match between Anatoly Karpov and Johann Hjartarson. Her contributions to the chess world did not stop there; in 1995, she was the chief arbiter of the World Chess Championship match between Garry Kasparov and Vishy Anand in New York.

Beyond her achievements in chess, Carol Yaretsky was also known for her exploits in the world of gambling. Alongside her husband, Richard Yaretsky, she developed a strategy to beat casinos at roulette by exploiting mechanical defects in the roulette wheels and tables. Their successes in European casinos, including Monte-Carlo, Divonne-les-Bains, Baden-Baden, and San Remo, earned them over a million dollars. Richard Yaretsky was born on December 1, 1931, in Szczecin, Poland (then part of Germany), and his family fled to the USA in the late 1930s to escape the Nazis.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
