Bill Chen: The Poker Pro with a Memory Like a Sieve

Bill Chen, a two-time WSOP bracelet winner and author of the book 'Mathematics of Poker', has had a notable career in the world of poker. Currently, he works at Susquehanna International Group, leading a department that analyzes sporting events.

Chen discussed a memorable hand against Phil Ivey during a $3,000 HORSE tournament at the 2010 World Series of Poker. The hand was a 3-hour heads-up match, and Chen mentioned that he has a poor memory, often forgetting where he puts his keys. Despite this, he was able to recall the details of the hand with the help of his friend Matt Gavrilenko.

During the hand, Chen opened with a bet from the button, and Ivey called from the big blind. On the flop of AsTh2h, Ivey checked, and Chen bet. The turn was 9c, and Ivey bet again, which Chen raised. Ivey called, and on the river 7h, Ivey check-raised and won the pot without showing his cards. Chen reflected on the hand, noting that Ivey's lead on the flop was unusual and that he would typically check in such a situation.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
