Andy Moore's Remarkable Run at the 1978 World Series of Poker
Andy Moore, a 37-year-old club owner from Sarasota, made an impressive 16th-place finish at the 1978 World Series of Poker. Sponsored by 40 or 50 regular clients of his nightclub, Five O'Clock, Moore's journey was filled with unique challenges and memorable moments.
Moore was sponsored by his nightclub's regulars, with Hermon Brown coordinating the financial aspects. The tournament had a total prize pool of $420,000, and Moore's highest stack during the tournament was $21,000. His final hand involved a king and queen of different suits against an opponent's three and five of spades.
Despite not winning, Moore's experience was highlighted by his interview with sports commentator Brent Musburger for a television program about the tournament. Bobby Baldwin, a professional poker player from Oklahoma, won the 1978 World Series of Poker. Rudd Weatherwax, trainer of the famous collie 'Lassie', denied a story about John Wayne losing to the dog in a poker game.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
