Ana Marquez's Poker Journey: From Intensity to Balance
Ana Marquez was born in 1986 in Malaga, Spain. At 17, she moved to the USA to study at the American University in Washington D.C., where she initially planned to pursue a career in diplomacy. However, her life took a different turn when she started playing poker with other students and later met notable players Greg Merson, Tony Gregg, and Christian Harder.
Marquez's academic work on poker history discussed the evolution of public opinion about poker and players since the 1970s. She took an academic leave to focus on poker, which intensified her love for the game. Initially, she played low-stakes cash games with friends and occasionally traveled to Atlantic City. Greg Merson convinced her to try online poker and transferred $20 to her account, leading her to transition to tournament poker and make it her primary focus.
Brin Kenney became Marquez's boyfriend and poker mentor, significantly influencing her game. In December 2010, she considered pursuing a master's degree but chose to focus on poker after a successful online year and a 10th place finish in the PCA main event. In August 2010, she signed a sponsorship deal with PokerStars during an EPT event in Barcelona. Her most successful year was 2013, winning a SCOOP tournament with a $1,000 buy-in and the Hollywood Poker Open. However, she reflected on her intense focus on poker, feeling she missed out on life experiences.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
