Aleksey Ponyakov: The Art of Poker and Self-Forgiveness

Aleksey Ponyakov, a seasoned poker player, has shared insights into his career, highlighting the importance of bankroll management and emotional control. Ponyakov started playing poker professionally in 2007 at the age of 17, initially focusing on online tournaments.

Ponyakov's journey in poker began when he was introduced to the game by friends who played Counter-Strike. He quickly became fascinated by the idea of winning real money and started playing poker seriously. His early years were marked by a lack of serious bankroll management, often playing with just 4 buy-ins. However, he soon realized the importance of managing his bankroll effectively.

In 2017, Ponyakov played the entire WCOOP series with a bankroll of less than $100k and managed to recover it. He won $170k in the Sunday Million by negotiating a deal in the top 5, showcasing his skills in both poker and negotiation. Ponyakov emphasizes the importance of emotional control and self-forgiveness in poker, noting that these skills have been crucial in his success.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
