Aik Hekston: Why Studying Specific Poker Hands Might Be a Waste of Time
Aik Hekston, a renowned poker player, recently shared his thoughts on the importance of analyzing poker hands and the role of solvers in improving gameplay. In an interview, Hekston discussed why he believes that focusing on specific hands where significant mistakes were made is not productive.
The Importance of Studying Common Spots
Hekston prefers to study common spots and understand the general boundaries of ranges rather than memorizing specific combinations. He believes that this approach gives him confidence in the most common situations. For example, he focuses on understanding how to play different boards when raising from the cutoff and calling on the button.
The Overestimation of Perfect Sizings
Hekston also mentioned that the importance of perfect sizings has been overestimated in poker. He explained that even if a solver suggests a specific sizing, slight variations in the sizing do not significantly affect the expected value (EV). He believes that players should focus more on understanding the overall strategy rather than getting bogged down in the details of perfect sizings.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
