WSOP Main Event: Taxman's Cut Revealed for Top Finalists

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event finalists faced significant tax implications on their winnings. Espen Jorstad, the winner, kept his full $10,000,000 due to the favorable UK tax regime. John Eames, who finished 4th, also kept his full $3,000,000 winnings because of the same tax benefits.

Michael Duek, who finished 3rd, had a different outcome. His $4,000,000 winnings were reduced to $2,406,936 after US taxes. Asher Conniff, from Brooklyn, faced the highest tax rate among the finalists. His $675,000 winnings were cut down to $349,598 due to a 48.21% tax rate.

Adrian Attenborough, an Australian living in Las Vegas, will keep $3,611,125 of his $6,000,000 winnings after paying US taxes. Matija Dobric, a Croatian player, will likely pay 30% tax on his $2,250,000 winnings due to the lack of a US-Croatia tax treaty. Aaron Duczak, a Canadian amateur player, will keep $945,000 of his $1,350,000 winnings after paying $405,000 to the IRS.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
