Incredible WSOP Facts: From First-Timers to Missing Finalists

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is filled with incredible stories and historical moments that have captivated poker enthusiasts for decades. Here are some of the most fascinating facts and curiosities from the WSOP.

Berry Johnston's Remarkable Streak

Berry Johnston is a name that stands out in the annals of the WSOP. He won the Main Event in 1986, taking home a prize of $570,000 among 140 players. Johnston's achievements are not limited to this single victory; he has participated in and won money in 30 consecutive WSOP editions from 1982 to 2012. In 2012, he won $2,500 in event #22, adding to his impressive record of five bracelets and over $2 million in WSOP earnings.

First-Time Winners of the Main Event

The WSOP has seen its fair share of first-time winners who went on to claim the Main Event title. These players, often referred to as the 'flautistas' or 'flutists,' include Hal Fowler (1979), Stu Ungar (1980), Robert Varkonyi (2002), Chris Moneymaker (2003), and Jerry Yang (2007). Their victories are a testament to the unpredictable nature of poker and the thrill of the game.

Stu Ungar's Mysterious Absence

One of the most intriguing stories from the WSOP involves Stu Ungar. In 1990, Ungar dominated the first day of the Main Event's final table but mysteriously did not appear for the second day. Despite his absence, he still managed to finish ninth, winning over $25,000. Ungar's life was marked by dramatic highs and lows, including struggles with drugs and ultimately, his untimely death.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
