WSOP Rules on Electronic Devices: What Poker Players Need to Know

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) has specific rules regarding the use of electronic devices at the poker table. These rules have evolved to keep up with the changing technology and potential for cheating.

Rule 63 states that all participants desiring to talk on a cell phone must be at least one table length away from their assigned table during all said communication. This rule was initially designed to prevent disruptive phone calls during the game. Additionally, Rule 63 permits participants not involved in a hand to text or email at the table but prohibits texting or emailing any other participant at the table. This rule aims to prevent players from obtaining information on how to play a hand, violating the “one player to a hand” rule.

Rule 63 also prohibits placing cell phones or other electronic communication devices on a poker table. This is to prevent sophisticated cheating methods, such as using the camera in the phone to read the cards as they are dealt. Rule 64.a incorporates a Nevada statute that makes it a criminal offense to use an electronic device to gain an advantage. Rule 64.b allows the reasonable use of electronic devices such as iPods and noise-cancelling headphones. However, Rule 64.c prohibits the use of electronic devices at the final three tables. Rule 64.d prohibits the use of charts, apps, artificial intelligence, or any other form of electronic assistance that could give a participant an advantage. Rule 64.e gives the WSOP discretion to remove all devices from players at the final three tables. Rule 64.g prohibits the use of betting apps, gaming charts, or any poker information tool while involved in a hand. However, Rule 64.g.1 allows participants to use the WSOP LIVE registration app, WSOP.com, or Caesars Mobile Sports App while involved in a hand.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
