World Series of Poker Kicks Off with Controversies and Surprises
The World Series of Poker (WSOP) started on September 30, 2021, and will run until November 23, 2021. A total of 88 tournaments will be held during this year's WSOP, breaking the record of 74 tournaments set in 2019.
The event kicked off with the industry workers' tournament, which saw 419 registrations, a decrease from the 685 registrations in the previous year. James Barnett, a dealer at Caesars Palace, won the industry workers' event and the first bracelet of the series. Barnett expressed his gratitude and joy, stating that he felt incredibly lucky to have won the bracelet, which he described as the cherry on top of an already wonderful life.
Meanwhile, in Singapore, Emmanuel Santakumar Kesigan, the organizer of a home poker game, was sentenced to 17 weeks in prison. Kesigan was accused of assaulting a player he suspected of cheating and stealing $52,000 from him. The incident occurred during a home game that violated COVID-19 restrictions, as it exceeded the limit of 5 people allowed for such gatherings.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
