Poker Legends Tor Hansen and Gavin Smith Pass Away
Tor Hansen, a renowned poker player, passed away on December 5, 2018, at the age of 71. Hansen was diagnosed with an incurable form of colorectal cancer in 2012, but his strong character and support from the poker community helped him live for more than six additional years.
Hansen, who lived in California for many years, returned to Norway after his diagnosis due to difficulties with medical insurance. Despite his health challenges, Hansen maintained a positive attitude and was known for his sense of humor. He was married to American actress Marcella Brozwell, whom he met in the mid-1990s. Hansen was the only Norwegian to win two WSOP bracelets, a testament to his skill and dedication to the game.
Gavin Smith, another notable poker player, passed away on January 15, 2019, at the age of 50. Smith won a WSOP bracelet in 2010, which was a significant achievement in his career. His biggest cash win was $1,128,278 from the WPT Mirage Poker Showdown in 2005. Smith was also known for his memorable appearances in television poker shows, where his charismatic personality and sense of humor often shone through.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
