Tom Dwan: From Casual Poker Player to Professional

Tom Dwan's journey from a casual poker player to a professional is an inspiring story. Tom Dwan grew up in Edison, New Jersey, in a middle-class family. He first played poker at the age of 17 with his family and friends. The game was casual, with a buy-in ranging from $5 to $10, and the rules were the only skill required. Tom Dwan started his online poker career with a $50 deposit. He made this deposit after a snowstorm prevented him and his friends from going to the cinema, leading them to discover Empire Poker and engage in free SnG tournaments.

Tom Dwan's online poker nickname is Durrrr. He chose this nickname because he wanted something that would stick in his opponents' minds without instilling fear. Tom Dwan earned around $15,000 by the start of the summer, which helped convince his parents that he didn't need a summer job. Tom Dwan's parents initially disapproved of his online poker hobby, preferring that he find a summer job. However, his earnings changed their minds, and they supported his decision to pursue a career in poker.

Tom Dwan's earnings continued to grow, reaching around $150,000 by his second semester at Boston University. Despite his success, Tom Dwan's parents were concerned about his casual approach to education. They wanted him to complete his university degree, believing it was in his best interest. Tom Dwan eventually decided to forgo his university education to focus on his poker career, but he remains open to the possibility of returning to education in the future. His parents, although initially hesitant, now support his decision to pursue a career in poker.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
