Stu Ungar: The Legendary Poker Player's Tragic Life

Stu Ungar, a name synonymous with poker greatness, won three WSOP Main Event titles in 1981, 1982, and 1997. His victories cemented his status as one of the most talented tournament players in history. However, his life was marked by struggles with addiction and personal demons.

Stu Ungar's daughter, Stephanie Ungar, is 38 years old and has two children. She remembers her father as a complex figure, deeply involved in gambling from a young age. His mother, Faye, was a gambler, and his father, Izidor, was a bookmaker and bar owner in Lower Manhattan. Stu Ungar started playing gin rummy in underground clubs before he was of legal age, showcasing his early talent and love for the game.

In 1977, Stu Ungar moved to Las Vegas and quickly became involved in the city's gambling scene. He was known for his aggressive and confident personality, which often led to trouble. Despite his talents, Ungar's life was plagued by addiction and financial struggles. He was found dead in a motel room in Las Vegas in November 1998 at the age of 45. His daughter Stephanie recalls that his aggressive personality often led to trouble, including a near-blacklisting from a major tournament for spitting at a dealer.
