Legendary Russian Poker Player Sergey Pevzner Passes Away at 55

Legendary Russian poker player Sergey Pevzner passed away on June 29, 2017, at the age of 55. Pevzner was one of the first major poker stars in Russia, known for his charisma, sense of humor, and friendly demeanor. He was a skilled negotiator and often helped other players agree on deal structures. Pevzner had a pragmatic approach to poker, focusing on making money rather than winning titles.

Pevzner's poker career spanned over a decade, during which he participated in numerous international tournaments. His first recorded tournament was in Helsinki in 2001, and he went on to compete in various countries, including Austria, Cyprus, Egypt, the USA, the Netherlands, and Russia. He was particularly active in his home country, frequently playing in both Saint Petersburg and Moscow.

Despite his success, Pevzner's pragmatic and cautious nature sometimes limited his potential earnings. He often preferred smaller, guaranteed wins over riskier, high-stakes games. His unique personality and contributions to the poker community will be remembered fondly by those who knew him.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
