RaúlGonzalez Reflects on High-Stakes Poker Career and Scams

RaúlGonzalez, a seasoned poker professional, recently reflected on his career, highlighting both the highs and lows. He admitted that in the early years, he felt he limited himself too much, which he now regrets. "In the first years (and at the peak) I limited myself too much. I think I could have achieved the same success without such sacrifices," he said.

One of the most challenging experiences for RaúlGonzalez was a high-stakes session against Izildur. The session, which included a crossbook, made him feel extremely uncomfortable. "They were very, very difficult. I think I never fully recovered from them. With him, we played $1k/$2k, but with a crossbook, which my acquaintances and Izildur's friends concluded. The real game was noticeably more expensive," he recalled.

RaúlGonzalez also mentioned playing a short session against Izildur at limits of 9k/18k or 10k/20k. He suspected that happyhammy might be a bot due to his unusual play in 2-7 and Badugi. "Only with happyhammy. He played in badugi so that I could not understand his actions even with a solver. In 2-7 there were similar things," he explained.

In addition to these high-stakes games, RaúlGonzalez has been the victim of significant scams totaling approximately $1.8 million. He listed several players and poker sites that scammed him, including a player who owed him $610k and another who owed $410k. "My rating of scammers: $610k – a player whose name I do not want to name. I still do not lose hope that one day he will return everything. But so far he cannot," he shared.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
