PokerStars Fights for a Foothold in the U.S. Market

PokerStars, the world's largest online poker site, is making bold moves to enter the U.S. market. The company has acquired a casino in Atlantic City and is facing opposition from the American Gaming Association.

Rational Group, the parent company of PokerStars and Full Tilt, announced a deal to acquire the Atlantic Club casino in Atlantic City, which was facing closure and potential job losses for nearly 2,400 employees. The American Gaming Association (AGA) recommended blocking the sale of Atlantic Club to PokerStars, citing concerns about PokerStars' past activities. PokerStars' corporate communications director, Eric Hollreiser, responded to AGA's claims, stating that the U.S. Department of Justice had allowed PokerStars to apply for a license in the U.S.

PokerStars has received licenses to operate in several countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Estonia, Belgium, Malta, and the Isle of Man.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
