The Rise and Fall of PokerStars: A Tale of Gambling and Legal Battles
In 2008, PokerStars hosted a charity event in Cannes with celebrities including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Don Cheadle. The event was sponsored by PokerStars, and the company used the opportunity to promote its brand with the help of Hollywood stars. Isai Scheinberg, the founder of PokerStars, preferred to stay out of the public eye and rarely appeared in public. He was known for his preference for anonymity and rarely gave interviews or appeared in public.
Scheinberg's company, PokerStars, faced legal challenges in the US due to the UIGEA act in 2006. The act prohibited financial institutions from processing transactions related to online gambling, which posed a significant threat to PokerStars' operations in the US. Despite the legal uncertainties, PokerStars remained in the US market and became a global leader in online poker. The company's decision to stay in the US market paid off, as its main competitor, PartyGaming PLC, chose to withdraw from the US market.
In 2011, the US Department of Justice shut down PokerStars' operations in the US, accusing the company of illegal activities. The shutdown was a significant blow to PokerStars, but the company has since been working to regain its foothold in the US market. PokerStars' headquarters, PYR Software Ltd., is located in Richmond Hill, a suburb of Toronto. The company was founded by Isai Scheinberg in 2000 and develops software for PokerStars. Scheinberg grew up in Lithuania, graduated from the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow State University, and has dual citizenship of Israel and Canada. He served in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and participated in the Yom Kippur War. Scheinberg worked for IBM in Israel and later moved to their Canadian office, settling in Richmond Hill.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
