PokerStars' $16 Million WSOP Saga: Challenges and Triumphs
PokerStars' involvement in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 2006 was marked by both significant achievements and unexpected challenges. The company's share of players in the WSOP increased from 4.4% in 2003 to an impressive 18.5% in 2006, bringing in a substantial $16,240,000 to the Rio for the event.
However, PokerStars faced considerable obstacles from Harrah's management. Despite bringing in a large number of players and a significant amount of money, Harrah's made it difficult for PokerStars to operate smoothly. This included restricting the transfer of funds and imposing unusual registration hours, such as between 2 AM and 6 AM.
One of the most notable challenges involved Sharon, the wife of a PokerStars employee, who had to carry large sums of money in her handbag for player registrations. On one occasion, she carried $500,000 in her bag, accompanied by security. Additionally, WSOP officials threatened to disqualify any player wearing a PokerStars logo that ended in .com, adding further complications to the event.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
