Poker Tournament Day 3: Drama and High Stakes

On the third day of the poker tournament, the organizers deviated from the standard schedule. Instead of playing five levels, players had to reach the prize mark, making the task seem marathon-like. With 108 players remaining at the start of the fourth level, the challenge was significant.

Sorel Mitzzi found himself in a tough spot with only 700 chips when the blinds were at 1,200-2,400 and the ante was 400. Despite the odds, Mitzzi managed to double up multiple times, eventually reaching 50,000 chips. Another notable moment involved Andrew Lichtenberger, who doubled up against Vanessa Russo with Qc Jd against her 9s 9c.

Jason Sommerville and Greg Mueller faced significant challenges. Sommerville's set against Somerfield was a highlight, while Mueller's loss to Tom Marchesi with a set of twos was a turning point. Phil Hellmuth also had a tough day, losing to Dan Illingworth after a series of unfortunate events. Phil Ivey, another prominent player, lost to AJ Jethalow, a semi-professional player, and was eliminated from the tournament.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
