Poker Pros Weigh In: What is 'Style of Play' and Why Does It Matter?
On May 16, 2021, Steven 'jorbs' Flaval, a popular streamer and top player in Slay the Spire, Magic: The Gathering, and online poker, asked his Twitter followers to explain the concept of 'style of play' and why decisions are made based on it.
Steven 'jorbs' Flaval is a professional poker player who has played in online poker tournaments. He has been grinding on SNE since 2011, a career that was permanently interrupted by Black Friday.
Arseny Karmatsky, a specialist in MTT, explained that in poker, style of play refers to deviations from optimal strategy in one direction or another. He believes that characterizing a player's game with a certain style means that one can pick a good exploit against them and make their strategy more profitable. He also noted that the spread of solvers is averaging out the game, and differences are now in the nuances.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
