Poker Pros Reflect on 2013: Highs, Lows, and Everything in Between

In a reflective piece, several top poker players looked back on their experiences and achievements from 2013. Alexander Kostritsin described the year as challenging, with a good start followed by struggles and a loss of skills. He mentioned that he lost his skills in game selection, time management, and bankroll management during his travels.

Kostritsin noted that he played against stronger opponents and struggled to regain his skills, leading to long sessions and emotional strain. Despite the challenges, he highlighted that 2013 was a year of family, particularly enjoying the first conscious year of his daughter's life. He also mentioned that Patrick Antonius avoided playing with him in the last two months of 2013.

Isaac Haxton rated 2013 as an 8.5 out of 10 in poker, highlighting a scientific approach to the game. He mentioned his series GDAM in Macao, where he placed 2nd in the Warm Up and 5th in the main event. However, he also lost over $1.5 million in games at $400/$800 blinds, mentioning MalACEsia and 'Red Army' as opponents.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
